Councillors

The role of each councillor is to focus on defining approval guidelines, policy formation, monitoring of management systems, community consultations, establishment of priorities and the preparation and adoption of Council's Strategic and Operational Plan, including budget estimates.

Phil Vickers

Mayor Phil Vickers was first elected to West Coast Council in 2009.  Phil has worked on the West Coast for 41 years and is currently employed by West Coast Heritage Ltd as Manager in Zeehan.  Previous positions include General Manager - West Coast Wilderness Railway, General Manager - West Coast Council, Council Clerk, Bank Clerk and Cadet Surveyor.

Married to Leanne they have two adult daughters and three grandchildren. Other interests include being a director of Crimestoppers Tasmania and a board member on the Cradle Coast Tourism Executive.  Cr Vickers and his wife have also operated their own company PD & LM Vickers Pty Ltd since 1999 which included six years operation of the Zeehan General Store. Outside normal work Cr Vickers likes to keep his heavy truck and machinery skills up to date when an opportunity arises and to tinker with his landrover collection.

Shane Pitt

Shane was first elected as a Councillor in 2009 and says he is "very passionate about the West Coast having lived here my entire life, I see the value of what we can offer the rest of the world."

Shane is a born and bred West Coaster, residing in Queenstown, he attended St Joseph’s Catholic School, Murray High School and did Trade Training at West Coast Community College. Shane has worked on the West Coast for 37 Years, predominantly in the mining industry, he was partner in an Electrical Contracting Business for 25 years and more recently is employed at Bluestone Tin Mine as an Electrical Specialist.

Shane is Council's Deputy Mayor and Chair of Council's Education and Training Advisory Committee. He also sit on Council's Audit Panel Committee and is Council's Representative to the Cradle Coast Authority.

Shane is active in the community and is Scout Leader Queenstown and has been part of the Scout Group for 32 years. Addtionally, he is President of The Queenstown Club, President of Mountain Heights School Association, Past President and now Public Officer  for Queenstown Anglers Club, Past President and now Public Officer of Queenstown Lions Club, Previous Chair and now Deputy Chair for the Unconformity Board.

 

Lindsay Newman

Lindsay Newman was first elected as a West Coast Councillor in 2014. His work experience lies in the industries of mining, fishing and hospitality. Lindsay was born in Zeehan and now lives between Burnie and Zeehan, his interests outside of work are gardening, fishing and sports. Lindsay feels "privelaged to live in one of the most unique areas of Australia" and is passionate about his West Coast hometown and municipality. As parents of three and grandparents of six, Lindsay and his wife Anna have rasied a thriving family on the West Coast and look forward to many more years of involvment in the region.

Robyn Gerrity was first elected as Councillor 2005. She served the community as Mayor in 2013 & 2014 and is a proud long-time Strahan resident.

 

Terry Shea

Terry is on his second term as an elected Councillor. Terry chose to go up for election to the West Coast Council as he has a passion for the betterment of the West Coast Community as a whole region. His work history is in the mining industry. Terry was born in Queenstown and lives there still with his wife whom he has been married to for 52 years! Father of three and Grandfather to five, Terry is President of the Queenstown Lions and drives the community car. In his spare time he enjoys fishing and gardening. 

Scott Stringer

Scott Stringer arrived on the West Coast at age six when his  parents travelled through Queenstown from Hobart for a holiday and decided to stay. He then attended Queenstown Central Primary School, Murray High and the West Coast Community College. Scott has spent the majority of his life on the West Coast.
 
Scott's work history covers a variety of roles such as mill operator, coordinator of the local Online Access Centre and a brief stint teaching computing at the Queenstown TAFE complex. Scott has served in the Army Reserve, initially with the 12/40th Battalion in Tasmania and then the 8/7th Battalion in Victoria.
 
Scott now lives with his partner Sylvia, and is father to three adult children and four grandchildren who all live in Queenstown. Addtionally, Scott's parnets and two brothers also live on the West Coast within easy visiting range! 

Leigh Styles

Leigh Styles MTeach, BBus(Hons) was first elected in October 2014 and is currently serving his second term as Councillor. Leigh grew up on the West Coast, attending Zeehan and Strahan Primary Schools, Murray High School and Mountain Heights School before moving to Hobart for Year 11 and 12 at Elizabeth College.

Leigh holds a Bachelor of Business with Honours and a Master of Teaching, through University of Tasmania. Leigh’s research interests include the retention of professionals in rural and remote areas such as the West Coast of Tasmania. 

Leigh works as a secondary teacher, with previous employment at Griffith University, The Commonwealth Bank and Wrest Point Casino. He spends his time between Strahan and Queenstown, Leigh is passionate about making the West Coast a "place where families choose to live and work."

As a Councillor, Leigh sits on the Education and Training Advisory Committee. He has previously chaired the Macquarie Harbour Salmonid Community Advisory Forum and served the board of The Unconformity. In the community, Leigh currently serves as the secretary of the Mt. Lyell – Strahan Picnic Committee Inc.

Mr Kerry Graham

Kerry was elected as a Councillor in 2018. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health), Diploma in WHS and auditing qualifications for safety systems and food safety systems and specialised disaster management skills. Kerry has been one of a specialist team deployed by government to provide public and environmental health response and recovery during disaster situations.

With a history working in Local Government in Environmental Health, Planning and Building and as Deputy CEO, Kerry has previously served 4 terms as an Environmental Health Adviser to the LGAQ and worked as a volunteer fire fighter for over 15 years. Kerry lives with his partner Kellie in Strahan where they run an accommodation business and a small whiskey bar. His hobbies include volunteering and fishing.
