Swimming Pools

The opportunity to learn to swim and enjoy aquatic facilities is recognised as an important recreational activity. Council maintains heated swimming pools in Queenstown, Zeehan and Rosebery.  Pool safety is an important issue, and therefore Council employs qualified Pool Lifeguards and Pool Attendants to supervise pool patrons.

The pools are costly facilities to maintain, and Council continues to seek cost-effective means of managing the pools. Following an extensive project and engagement with the West Coast community, the West Coast Aquatics Strategy and Business Plan was adopted in September 2017.

Council is currently working with @leisure planners to implement the adopted recommendations for the 2017-2018 swimming pool season.

As part of the West Coast Aquatic Facilities Strategy a temperature-based recreational swimming hours policy has been adopted.

The weather forecast will be monitored, with the trigger for changes to opening hours based on the Bureau of Meteorology afternoon (approx. 4.30pm) weather forecast for Queenstown and Rosebery.

Should the forecast be a maximum less than 16°C pools will not open for public recreational swimming. Forecasts will be monitored early each day to determine if there has been significant forecast change on the day.

Pools will open for bookings and regular programs regardless of cold weather, in consultation with program coordinators.

Should the forecast be for temperatures above 30°C Council may decide that pools remain open later than the normal closing time, provided there is ongoing demand, adequate lighting, staff available and adequate time to prepare for next day of operation.

Council will utilise various communication channels to ensure details regarding opening hours is relayed to the public.
