Mayor's Message 19 July 2016

Council representatives met with CMT senior management last week for an update on the situation at the Mt. Lyell Mine.

The mine continues to be on care and maintenance as copper prices hold back the mine reopening.  Copper supplies around the world are expected to diminish within eighteen months which will hopefully drive copper prices back up and create the opportunity for the mine to recommence operations.

Development of  the Sustainable Murchison Plan is continuing, with the General Manager and myself meeting recently with representatives from the Burnie, Circular Head, King Island and Waratah-Wynyard Council’s to finalise the plan details. The plan has been developed to help provide a unified vision for the Murchison region over the next 25 years and will link the vision of the West Coast Community Plan 2025 to broader Murchison regional priorities.  The draft Plan will be available for comment soon.

Queenstown & Districts Bendigo Bank ManagerSandy Chilcott has been appointed chairperson of Council’s Audit Committee following an advertising period.  Sandy will bring a wealth of experience to the Committee, which will formally meet for the first time in August.  The Committee assists Council in providing a transparent and independent process in its financial, management and other practices.

Council will have its monthly meeting tonight in Zeehan from 5pm.  Members of the public are welcome to attend as Council considers a range of reports, including the adoption of the 2016-2017 Annual Plan and Budget Estimates and several requests for assistance under Council’s Financial & In-Kind Assistance Policy.
