Mayor's Message 30 August 2016

It is with much sadness that the West Coast farewelled Peter Reid last week.  I have known Peter for decades and like most, I was extremely shocked at his sudden passing.  Peter was a West Coast Councillor for many years, serving the community as Deputy Mayor and also as Acting Mayor on several occasions.  Peter had an unwavering love of the West Coast and volunteered countless hours to several community organisations, including the Galley Museum and Scouts.  One would always run into Peter as he went on his daily walks, always happy to say hello and have a chat.  Condolences to Peter’s family and friends.  He will be sadly missed.

Council is participating in the Road Safety Advisory Council’s ‘Secured Loads’ campaign reminding road users to carry loads that are safe and secure. As part of that campaign, State Growth have installed signage near the Zeehan Landfill.  Securing loads is an important safety measure but one that is often neglected – not only can waste from loads look unsightly when left on the sides of roads, it can also cause serious accidents.

An additional meeting of Council will be held tonight in Queenstown from 5pm. Council will consider several documents that will assist in us meeting legislative requirements as well as providing direction for planning into the future.  These include a revised Code for Tenders and Contracts, Asset Management Strategy, Transport Asset Management Plan and the Long Term Financial Plan and Strategy taking us through to 2027. Members of the public are invited to come along to the meeting.
