Mayor's Message 1 November 2016

A busy weekend ahead on the West with the Gem and Mineral Fair in Zeehan and Beach to Bay in Strahan.

Both events have become mainstays on our calendars and are well supported by West Coasters and visitors to the region.  I would encourage everyone to head along to both – there’s lots of activities to keep people of all ages occupied!

Council will be hosting a meeting next week about RV Camping.  This continues our work to manage RV Camping and to find the right balance between regulating camping practices and continuing to support and grow our tourism industry.  We recognise the importance of visitors and will work to deliver outcomes that are not detrimental to the regions attraction as a key location to visit.  For more details about the meeting contact Council’s Economic Development, Tourism & Events Coordinator by calling 64714 700.

Demolition works at the Queenstown Recreation Ground have been postponed following the discovery of asbestos.  Council are working to ensure the buildings are demolished in accordance with safety requirements.  In the meantime the ground remains open for public use, with the three building sites fenced off - people using the ground or walking by the buildings should not be alarmed regarding the asbestos as it has not been disturbed.

Other important projects forming part of Council’s extensive Capital Expenditure program for 2016/17 are in the final planning phase and will be rolled out soon, including the $500,000 Footpath Program, the Roads to Recovery Program (over $500,000), Landfill Design and Upgrade Project and the Community Housing Upgrade Project. Council’s total commitment to improving capital and other infrastructure projects for the community in 16-17 totals over $2.5M and is designed to include input from local contractors and others affected by the economic downturn, to help stimulate activity for the region as well as providing first class assets and infrastructure for the community and visitors.
