Mayor's Message 17 January 2017

How quickly did Christmas come and go - already we are in the third week of January! Council, like most businesses, is right back into the swing of things. Our first meeting for 2017 will be held in Queenstown tonight from 5pm.

I implore everyone to take care on our roads – we are seeing a lot more cyclists on our highways as they travel to experience the West Coast.  With our highways narrow and windy in sections watch out for those on two wheels and be mindful of keeping an adequate distance, especially when overtaking.

Please be advised that the speed limit on Lynchford Road, Queenstown has been reduced to 60 kilometres per hour.  The new speed limit will assist in reducing hazards associated with the road condition. This is an interim step as Council will be continuing discussions with stakeholders regarding potential funding for reconstruction of the road, which is expected to cost around $3million.

A recent meeting with Minister Rene Hidding was very positive with a variety of matters from transport to tourism and economic development discussed.  The Minister was supportive of Council’s commitment to meet the outcomes of the West Coast Community Plan 2025.  Over the next few months that will involve extensive engagement with those involved in the West Coast tourism industry to develop a plan for the direction of tourism in the region, including a branding exercise.  Council is also continuing its planning for an airport feasibility study and will continue discussions with the State Government regarding future transport options for the West Coast.

A reminder that fire permits are now required across Tasmania.  Landowners conducting controlled burns to reduce fuel hazards need to obtain a fire permit from Tas Fire to confirm the right controls are in place.  Campfires and BBQs don’t require a permit, however people must remain in attendance at all times whilst fires remain alight.
