West Coast Council

Animal Control

The Animal Control Program undertakes a regulatory role in relation to the control of dogs and other livestock within the district. Council's Municipal Inspector carries out all Animal Control functions, in accordance with the requirements of the Dog Control Act 2000 and Council policy.

Successful control of dogs and other animals relies upon education and promotion of responsible dog ownership, in addition to the collection and impounding of stray animals and administering the registration of dogs within the district.

Council has produced a Dog Information Flyer dog%20info%20flyer (166 kb) which details why dog registration is important and what options are available to dog owners - for example Council offers pension and concession card discounts and whole of life registrations.

Council is proactive in ensuring that all dogs within the municipality are registered by 31 July each year.  Infringements are issued to owners of dogs found to be unregistered after this date. It is vital that all infringements are paid to prevent further action as Council will refer your details to the Monetary Penalties Enforcement Service - you have only 28 days to comply with the conditions stated on the infringement notice.

All dogs aged over six months must be registered!

Do you need to register you dog? If so please contact visit the Queenstown Council Office, or Council's Agencies at the Zeehan, Rosebery and Strahan Post Offices.

If you have a query relating to Animal Control please contact Council's Animal Control Officer (details below) or complete a Customer Feedback Form.
