Sport & Recreation Advisory Committee
In 1995 the West Coast Council commissioned and released the Hepper Marriott Report, titled A Sport & Recreation Plan for West Coast Council 1995-2005. This report established a strategic plan for the West Coast Council in relation to future sport and recreation decisions and actions. The West Coast Council Sport & Recreation Advisory Committee was formed as a result of recommendations made in the Hepper Marriott Report.
The Committee consists of two Councillors and representatives from towns within the West Coast municipality. The Committee's main roles are those of advocacy and review within the scope of Council's strategic direction for sport and recreation. The Committee provides advice to Council and makes recommendations for furthering sport and recreation on the West Coast.
The Committee works to identify sport and recreation needs, priorities and funding for new initiatives within the West Coast. Tasks undertaken by the Committee include the exploration of partnerships to improve provision of sport and recreation, promotion of opportunities to be physically active and the implementation of strategies for the ongoing maintenance of Council's database of sport and recreation organisations.
Following the removal of the State Government-funded West Coast Sport & Recreation Officer in 1989, Sport & Recreation Tasmania's North West Regional Officer has serviced the West Coast. With the assistance of this Regional Officer the Committee has worked towards evaluating community needs, providing development opportunities for sport and recreation groups, encouraging increased participation and identifying and prioritising needed maintenance and upgrades of Council sport and recreation facilities.
