Council Facilities

Swimming Pools

The opportunity to learn to swim and enjoy aquatic facilities is recognised as an important recreational activity. Council maintains heated swimming pools in Queenstown, Zeehan and Rosebery.

Pool safety is an important issue, and therefore Council employs qualified Pool Lifeguards and Pool Attendants to supervise pool patrons.

The pools are costly facilities to maintain, and Council continues to seek cost-effective means of managing the pools.  All three West Coast Swimming Pools are in need of general maintenance, however no funds are currently available to cover the costs.

To alleviate this problem Council has developed a three year plan that will ultimately save enough money to do the required work and also significantly lower the yearly operational costs.

Council hopes to close one swimming pool a year, starting with the Rosebery pool during the 2009-2010 summer.  Queenstown will be closed in 2010-2011 and Zeehan in 2011-2012.  The savings each year from not running one facility will cover the maintenance costs.  After the completion of the works it is estimated that running costs will decrease from $450,000 per year to $300,000 per year.

Pools usually open in November each year and close the following March.
