Zeehan Landcare

The Zeehan Landcare Group was formed in October 2002 to address land and water degradation at Zeehan. The main issues were considered to be environmental weeds, acid mine drainage (AMD) and rehabilitation of an historic mining area. AMD contaminates local waterways and would continue for thousands of years without rehabilitation. With no soil and no vegetation cover, abandoned mines were ideal sites for invasion by the persistent weeds gorse and broom.
Zeehan Landcare developed the Zeehan Land Management Plan in July 2003 in consultation with major stakeholders. Additionally, the Zeehan Weed Management Plan was launched by Mayor Darryl Gerrity in November 2003.
The Group has been a member of the West Coast Weed and Fire Management Group since 2002, and has received significant support from the group.
Zeehan Landcare meets regularly and organises weekend working bees to improve the environment in and around the Zeehan community with a focus on controlling the areas gorse, weed issues.
