What is Cultural Commons?
The West Coast Cultural Commons Committee (the Committee) has been established to aide in the growth and implementation of opportunities for local communities to have a place to connect and share creative projects.
The Committee will help facilitate connections between West Coast towns and between artists and other sectors, bringing people together to explore creative opportunities for the greater and collective benefit of the West Coast.
The West Coast Cultural Strategy (WCCS) envisioned the creation of a Cultural Commons, with four goals:
- Storytelling, that cultivates distinctive West Coast storytelling and dialogue;
- Relationships that form new collaborations and partnerships across the region;
- Safeguards that represent the region and safeguard its cultures; and
- Aligns resources for sustainable growth of cultural initiatives.
West Coast Council is supporting the establishment of The West Coast Cultural Commons Committee as proposed in the WCCS, by providing administrative assistance during the initial phase of the organisation and then will be an active member.
The Commons will be a neutral, incorporated, community-based organisation with its own committee and charter.
Expressions of Interest
The Commons are not a Council organisation, but we are supporting the start-up of this community led group.
To do that we are seeking expressions of interest from those interested in the arts or culture on the West Coast.
Those that join the Commons will need to work together to get the organisation set up to support the community to realise the vision in the West Coast Cultural Strategy.
This will involve setting up the organisational structure and determining together how the group will work.
