Governance sets the structure for policy and strategy development along with the processes and culture of Council as an organisation, enabling Council to successfully carry out its many roles.

Good governance builds trust, leads to better decisions and builds confidence in Councillors and the broader Council team.

West Coast Council follows the Good Governance Guide for Local Government in Tasmania. This means that across all its processes, operations and dealings with all its stakeholders, Council will;

  • follow the characteristics and benefits of good governance
  • demonstrate in practice
    • ethical standards
    • council roles and relationships
    • strategic planning and monitoring performance
    • risk management
    • fair and transparent decision-making
    • legislative compliance
    • continuous improvement
  • good governance and land-use planning, including
    • councils as a planning authority
    • relationships between a planning authority and stakeholders
    • legislative compliance
    • strategic land-use planning
