Councillors

The Local Government Act 1993 provides detailed information on the role of Council, and of Councillors as individuals.

The Role of Councillors

Councillors represent and act in the interests of their community. Councillors must consider the community’s diverse needs in its decision-making, setting and monitoring strategic objectives and ensuring resources are managed sustainably and responsibly.

When reviewing, debating and making decisions about issues brought before them, Councillors must aim to achieve the best outcomes for the local community whilst considering the long-term and cumulative effects of decisions.

Local Government and Local Government

State Government legislation also requires each council to act as the planning authority for their municipality. In this role, councillors consider development applications and make administrative decisions that are based on the council’s planning scheme. While councillors are obliged to consider the community’s views, they must make planning decisions based on whether a planning application is consistent with the local planning scheme.

Councillors are the bridge between the community and the council, ensuring that the voices of the residents and ratepayers are heard, and their interests are represented.

Code of Conduct

Councillors must adhere to a Code of Conduct and any expenses Councillors incur as a result of their role will be reimbursed by West Coast Council Councillor Expenses Policy.
