Seasonal Lifeguards

West Coast Council is seeking enthusiastic, reliable and community-minded people to join our team as Seasonal Lifeguards (including Senior Lifeguards) at the Queenstown and Zeehan Swimming Pools during the 2026-2027 swimming pool season. We’re looking for people who are committed to providing a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment for all pool users.

Our swimming pools are important community facilities, providing residents, families, schools, community groups and visitors with opportunities for recreation, exercise and water-based activities throughout the summer months.

The Zeehan and Queenstown swimming pools are open to the public between 1 December and 31 March. Pool operating hours may vary throughout the season to respond to community demand, programs, school and community bookings, and operational requirements. Accordingly, applicants should have flexibility to work a range of rostered hours.

Whether you are an experienced lifeguard or interested in obtaining the qualifications required to become one, we encourage you to apply.

Seasonal Lifeguards
As a Seasonal Lifeguard, you’ll help provide a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment for everyone using our Queenstown and Zeehan swimming pools. You’ll supervise pool users, promote safe behaviour and respond to emergencies when required. You’ll also assist with daily pool operations, including water-quality testing, cleaning, opening and closing procedures, customer service and supporting school, club and community activities.

We’re looking for reliable, community-minded people who communicate well, stay calm under pressure, and enjoy working with the public.

Senior Lifeguards
Council may also appoint Senior Lifeguards to support the day-to-day operation of its aquatic facilities. Senior Lifeguards may work with a greater level of independence and responsibility in accordance with their qualifications, experience, Council procedures and applicable aquatic safety requirements. In addition to general lifeguard responsibilities, Senior Lifeguards may be responsible for:
  • coordinating day-to-day facility operations during rostered shifts, including opening and closing procedures,
  • undertaking water-quality testing and basic plant room checks, with training provided where required.
  • Supporting seasonal aquatic staff and responding to operational or safety issues.
  • Maintaining accurate facility, safety and water-quality records.
  • Supporting school, club and community bookings.
  • Liaising with Council supervisors regarding incidents, maintenance and other operational matters.
Please read the position descriptions below, to gain a fuller understanding of the position requirements. Applicants must also meet any legislative requirements applicable to working with children as relevant to the duties of the position.

Important: some shifts may involve early-morning, afternoon or evening work, as well as weekends and public holidays.  There may also be occasions where Lifeguards are required to work at both the Zeehan and Queenstown Swimming Pools. Please advise in your application your preferred swimming pool location, and if you would have capacity to work at both pools if required.
