The future of one of the West Coast’s most significant maritime artefacts – the Cape Sorell Lighthouse Lens – has taken an important step forward, with West Coast Council formally noting a detailed report on the heritage item at its July meeting.
Councillors acknowledged the lens’s deep cultural, historical and tourism value, and agreed to explore options for a permanent public display.
Once a critical navigational beacon guiding vessels along the rugged coastline, the lens scale and craftsmanship make it a rare example of early lighthouse engineering that few people have the chance to see up close. A dedicated display would complement existing heritage across the region, with the lens offering a powerful storytelling piece that highlights the West Coast’s maritime past.
As part of the recommendations adopted by Council, officers will now prepare a comprehensive report outlining potential display locations, estimated project costs, funding pathways and implementation requirements to ensure the lens is preserved to heritage standards.
Council also agreed that the lens will remain in its current secure storage arrangement until a final decision is made, ensuring the artefact remains protected while planning progresses.
