West Coast Council wishes to reassure the community and tourism operators that the West Coast Visitor Information Centre is not closing.

Concerns have been raised regarding the future of the Centre. Council wants to make it absolutely clear to the West Coast tourism industry and the broader community that the Visitor Information Centre will continue to operate.

The Visitor Information Centre has been operating from temporary premises due to the waterfront redevelopment and the heritage listing of the original Information Centre building. While this has added a layer of uncertainty around operations, Council acknowledges the importance of the heritage‑listed building and is committed to continuing to investigate the works required, in line with heritage requirements, to enable a return to that building. Council recognises this is a longer‑term process and will take some time to resolve.

Council will continue to work closely with the Visitor Information Centre team and engage with stakeholders, including tourism operators who partner with the Centre to provide quality experiences for the thousands of visitors who come to the West Coast each year. This engagement will focus on maintaining effective operations, service levels and strong partnerships that support the local tourism industry. Council asks operators to continue supporting the Centre.

Mayor Shane Pitt said Council understands the importance of clarity and collaboration during this period:

“The West Coast Visitor Information Centre plays a vital role in welcoming visitors and supporting our local tourism industry. While we are managing the complexities associated with a heritage‑listed building, I want to be very clear that the Centre is not closing. Council is committed to working with stakeholders and ensuring high‑quality visitor services continue to be offered through the information centre.”

The Visitor Information Centre remains a key asset for the West Coast, supporting local businesses, destination marketing and events, and contributing to the region’s economy. Council remains committed to maintaining strong and sustainable tourism services for the community and visitors alike.
