MAYOR’S SUMMARY NOVEMBER 2024
The Ordinary Meeting of Council was held on Thursday 12 December 2024 in Queenstown.
The meeting was made available to view via LIVE Stream. The meeting was open to public attendance. There were 2 members of the public in attendance.
PUBLIC QUESTION TIME
Council received question from the following members of the community.
Sean Idle - Latham Street, Queenstown Sent Shane a video of a West Tamar Councillor who has sided with Port Hedland Council, Seduna Council and Russel Broadbent MP to put a halt to the mRNA Pfizer and moderna vaccination as DNA contamination has been found in the vials. Wondering if Shane and Council have seen the videos sent, including videos sent by Port Hedland. Mayor Pitt stated he has seen the Port Hedland video and it has been forwarded to Councillors as well as discussed at a workshop. Sean asked if Council will join Port Hedland and Russel Broadbent MP. UK oncologist Prof Angus Dalgleish has claimed to see more cancers since the rollout of the vaccinations, calls for further investigation, vaccinations only took 9 months to make and did not go through the proper procedure for rollout. Mayor Pitt took on notice to discuss further at workshop with Councillors. |
Trevor Giles - Beach Street, Strahan Would Council please take over control of Beach Street, Strahan. Council was very generous when they sold the original caravan park to private owners, however they included the condition that a fence should be built along the boundary of the north-south road section. Present owners have removed the fence creating, in my opinion, potential dangers given that Beach Street is a shared pathway allowing access by vehicles and pedestrians over such a wide area seems unacceptable. General Manager advised she has contacted Mr Giles and he has stated it appears the caravan park is building a new fence. Council will conduct an inspection and if not resolved, Council will respond to Mr Giles directly. |

Cr Jordan Could Councillors please have an update on floor replacement and disability access/toilets work at the Queenstown Basketball Stadium. I understand funds were obtained by Junior Basketball through a Federal grant, $30K and Council contribution of $60K. There is no senior roster in town now, as they are waiting on works to be completed before committing to a roster. Currently kids are travelling outside the region for Basketball. Have plans been finalised along with a contractor sought? Estimated timeline for completion. General Manager advised there has been significant delays through the building designer. Drawings are now with the hydraulic designer for final signoff. Floors will not be replaced, only stripped and recoated. Extension of committed funding to December 2025. Council will go to tender once the designs are completed. Will continue providing updates as the project progresses. Will not take long to deliver once tendered. |
Cr McKay Can the intersection on the STRAHAN ESPLANADE & ESK STREET at the Strahan Village Reception area - be investigated for Re marking and Traffic Management. An area has been Hot Mixed over existing lines, and the changes made previously to the angle parking has created a confusing road navigation for users. Manager of Infrastructure and Operations took on notice. |
Cr McKay I will ask and continue to ask on updates to the following known issues in our Community :
Manager of Infrastructure and Operations advised TasWater are progressing the connection and should be connected before Christmas. Harvey Street has been raised again with State Growth and General Manager has raised it to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary level. Regarding the turn area, drainage works have been completed and the area will be gravelled and available for use by the weekend, with the final seal being completed in the new year. Mayor Pitt asked that information regarding TasWater response re Strahan Playground be emailed to him so he could relay information on MOA. General Manager advised State Growth responded during this discussion and have asked their contractor to attend the site and assess. |

Motion – Cr Hamer |
It would be imperative to investigate the fire hazard/scrub around the water tower at Strahan. As this is a major asset within our municipality it needs to be protected. Recommendation: Investigate all fire hazards around all west coast water filtration plants and reduce the fire risk, and /or, the asset to receive an abatement notice to have fire risks reduced or removed by whoever is responsible. |
Moved: Cr Hamer Seconded: Cr Graham |
Outcome: Carried |
Mayor Pitt stated while not Council assets but we need to advocate to mitigate risks. General Manager stated TasWater owns the land and the team has done inspections and they currently do not meet the criteria for abatements. Cr Graham state it is not an abatement issue, it is trees growing around and blocking the view of the harbour. Tourists then standing on the table to get a photo and creating a public safety issue. Council will write to the relevant authority to raise the issue and ask that they mitigate the public safety risk. |
Motion – Cr Hamer |
My request that was received regarding lighting on the Warf, would be to investigate why no action has taken place. Houses on top of the hill have demonstrated the Warf light directly shines in their houses and accommodation and now needs to be removed or moved. This is the third request and people are now angry at the total disregard of this issue. Recommendation: Request the light on wharf be removed or dropped back into its original position, rational also for the safety of operations on the wharf and not to shine a light on a closed toilet block. |
Moved: Cr Hamer Seconded: |
Outcome: Withdrawn |
