PUBLIC QUESTION TIME

There was one question presented to Council (via correspondence) for  Public Question Time.

Samantha Farr,

54 Main Street Zeehan

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to ask if council could please discuss/consider a reduction to the speed limit on Main Street Zeehan

I would propose that the current 60Kmh zone entry point commencing at the Bluestone Village is reduced to 50Kmh and remain as such all the way through to the current 50Kmh zone that commences at what is considered the 'Shopping Centre' on Main Street.

The main reason I propose this is because the true 'Shopping Centre' of Zeehan is the IGA store that is currently in the 60Kmh zone. The IGA is the main daily retail focus for the town for all residents, workers and tourists alike particularly as there hasn't been a second supermarket in town for well over a decade.

On top of that the IGA is where the Tassielink bus departs from and more importantly our school kids gather and are picked up and dropped off by the school bus service. Overall Main Street is primarily a residential street with people driving in and out of their properties just like any other residential environment and therefore I think we residents should get the same respect as anyone residing in a residential side street.

With the exciting new mining developments, we have in Zeehan now, we are seeing a large increase of heavy trucks in town and although most seem to be driven at lawful speeds they are of course in an emergency situation harder and slower to stop. The heavy vehicles are not necessarily the culprits as far as speeding goes it's a much more diverse mix of all vehicles and of course mainly 'locals' of all varieties rather than tourists.

Someone reviewing Main Street for safety would probably consider it very safe because it's nice and wide and has some longer straight sections with good vision, but that in itself is exactly what encourages some out there to 'floor it' because they know there are no obstacles or slow bends to deal with.

Thank you for your attention.

Response:

Council decided they would write to the State Government and ask that the speed limit is reduced from 60kms to 50kms.
