It’s hard to believe this is the final Mayor’s Message for 2017. Each year seems to go quicker than the last – an important reminder for us all to slow down and take the time to appreciate the beautiful place we live in and the wonderful communities we’re a part of.
Council has a busy few weeks to conclude the year – our Annual General Meeting, along with our normal monthly meeting, will be held in Strahan this Thursday. We’re also in the process of accepting proposals from consultants to work with the West Coast community to develop a new brand for the region. This is perhaps one of the most exciting and important projects the community will be involved in since we created 2025, our community plan. A new brand will need to be owned by all of the West Coast, across all industries, and will used to attract economic and population growth. This is also the first significant project that the new local tourism association and Council will be working in partnership together – I encourage all involved in the tourism industry to contact Chair Anthony Brown to discuss membership.
The West Coast Education Project with UTAS is progressing and Education and Training Advisory Committee representatives have been appointed. There are a number of other projects that will fall under this committee, with the involvement of stakeholders across West Coast schools and industry and government leaders. It’s great to see so many people enthusiastic about improving access to education and training opportunities for West Coast residents (both young and older learners).
On behalf of all Councillors and Staff at West Coast Council, best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.
Phil Vickers
