I was pleased to meet with Joan Rylah MP last week as she announced Council had been successful in two Community Infrastructure Fund applications.

Over $90k will assist Council to reconstruct a section of footpath on Penghana Road Queenstown and $100k will go towards the replacement of two bridges in Strahan. 

Council has a big job ahead to improve its infrastructure and we’re fully aware that there are many roads and footpaths in the region needing works.  We can’t however do it all at once.  Our budget restraints mean we must look at what we can complete with limited funds whilst also addressing safety concerns.  Being able to supplement works with funding is vital to Council being able to progress works.  Wherever the works start, there will be residents asking us to start in their area.  The most important thing for us all to remember is that Council has a plan moving forward.  We just ask everyone be patient.  Any concerns regarding conditions of infrastructure should be logged with Council in the request system – this can be done at the Council office or via the website. 

Deputy Mayor Shane Pitt and senior Council staff met with the UTAS Vice Chancellor last week to discuss education opportunities on the West Coast.  This was followed by a dinner with key West Coast education and industry stakeholders. By all accounts the meetings were very positive and Council is excited that, through the Education and Training Advisory Committee, we will be working together to progress an exciting model for further education that will build the capacity of the West Coast and the aspirations of our youth – and any West Coaster wanting to study.
