I attended the TasWater representatives meeting last week, and given all the upheaval happening at the moment I made the comment that I believe TasWater staff are doing an exceptional job to keep operating under great stress.

Council staff are in the final stages of supporting Active Strahan in their interpretive signage installation.  The signs detail Strahan’s history, whilst also providing ways to stay active.  A great effort by Active Strahan to re-invest funds raised through their Beach to Bay event back into the West Coast community.  Council has once again provided support for Beach to Bay through our Financial and In-Kind Support Policy, with registrations now open for the 2017 event (to be held 4 November).

Council has been working over the last few months to fully understand the services delivered by social service providers on the West Coast, with the aim of ensuring that services continue to meet the needs of residents.  It is vitally important that individuals and families who are struggling can readily access support.  A new team leader for the Integrated Family Support Services Program has been appointed and will be based in Zeehan.  We are the only Council in Tasmania undertaking this type of work, and do so under agreement with Mission Australia. 

The West Coast Christmas Cheer Appeal is a great initiative, led by Anglicare and partners, to raise funds to help all West Coasters enjoy Christmas.  A fashion parade will be held at the Heemskirk Motor Hotel on 26 August, then five quiz nights across the region in September and October.  A great way for people to raise money that will be distributed to West Coast residents who need that helping hand.
