Mayor’s Message 22 May 2018

This week is National Volunteer Week and I’d like to acknowledge all those who volunteer in our community, whether it be those in the SES, sporting groups, community organisation or many others.

Volunteers play a significant role in the provision of services, sport and recreation and other opportunities here on the West Coast. To celebrate this week, Council has launched a Facebook group called ‘West Coast Volunteers Volunteers to connect and share ideas, to share information about upcoming events, to reach out to potential volunteers, and to let the wider community know about the varied and vibrant volunteer landscape on the West Coast. We will also be hosting a volunteer recognition event tomorrow (Wednesday 23 May) at the Zeehan Scout Hall from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. So please join me for light refreshments to recognise the many volunteers in our community. For more information and to RSVP please email cdeo@westcoast.tas.gov.au.

A reminder that feedback as part of Council’s Sport and Recreation Review closes this Sunday. With various sessions held across the region last week it is certainly pleasing to see people coming along and having their say. Thank you to all those who took part in this important exercise. For more information or to take part, please visit Council’s website at www.westcoast.tas.gov.au or contact Council on 6471 4700.

Last week Petuna and Tassal entered into a joint venture to cooperatively manage their fish farms in Macquarie Harbour. Under the joint venture, each company will maintain ownership of their individual leases and infrastructure, while a joint operational management committee will oversee the management of the leases. This is a welcome announcement that puts this important industry on a sustainable footing for the long term and I am very encouraged by the commitment to ensuring the local workforce in Strahan is prioritised.
