West Coast tourism operators gathered at the West Coast Heritage Centre last Friday for an informal networking session.

The aim of the session was to get to know the new local tourism association committee, meet the new Regional Tourism Manager Theresa Lord, and learn more about the Australian Masters Games and the potential for increased visitor economy as a result of the games.

The session was a good opportunity to further explain the new direction West Coast tourism is heading, coming off the back of the successful Destination West Coast forum and completion of the West Coast Destination Action Plan.   With a rejuvenated tourism association seeking to build partnerships and grow membership to ensure all involved in the local tourism industry are represented, and a West Coast branding strategy to be completed, things are certainly looking positive.

As director of the West Coast Heritage Centre, I announced at the session that entry to the Centre will be free for West Coast business operators during August - including those not directly involved in the tourism industry.  It’s important that as operators we are aware of the variety that is on offer across our region.  By offering free famils such as this, we can cross-promote our experiences which will not only benefit our individual businesses but also improve the visitor experience.

The first meeting of the new financial year will be held from 5pm tonight at the Council Chambers.  Council will be considering reports for allocation of the Roads to Recovery, Road Reseal and Stormwater Improvement Program funding, with sites across the municipality nominated for works.  Also on the agenda are applications for assistance under the Financial and In-Kind Assistance Policy, including allocation of funding for the annual Community Assistance Program.
