Mayor's Message 28 February 2017

Council’s capital works program is progressing well, with the footpath program commencing in Zeehan this week

These works will involve areas of Main Street and follows the completion of footpath upgrades in Cutten and Driffield Streets, Queenstown.  Works in Preston Street, Queenstown are also nearing completion.

Today is the last day our swimming pools will be open this summer.  Whilst the restructure in pool operations has resulted in some changes and adjustments, by both Council and the wider community, I feel that overall the changes have been positive and a step forward towards ensuring we can operate the facilities in a more sustainable manner, making best use of available funds to do so.  A full review of how the season went will be undertaken by Council as we move into budget preparation mode for next financial year.

It’s hard to believe we are already talking about the next budget.  Very soon we will be asking the community to submit projects or ideas they would like to see implemented during 2017/2018.  Continuing our commitment to engage with our community, a public meeting will also be held this year to present and explain the next Annual Plan and Budget, this will be following the public submission period.  Stay tuned for dates and more details.

Council’s Economic Development, Tourism & Events Coordinator has met with Masters Games management regarding the hosting of an event on the West Coast. As announced last week this is will be Trail Running, with details to be confirmed.  There is the potential for other events also.  We are hopeful these games will see athletes and support staff visit the West Coast either before or after the event, boosting our economy and tourism industry.
