The local tourism association held its AGM last week, with a new committee elected.

With RACT and West Coast Wilderness Railway now on the committee, along with representatives from other West Coast tourism operations, it is a positive step towards achieving a stronger tourism industry.  As the new committee works towards fine-tuning its structure and operations, Council looks forward to building a positive relationship with the association as it becomes truly representative of the West Coast tourism industry.  Council will be working in partnership with the association on the branding strategy for the region – highlighted during the West Coast Community Plan 2025 and the Destination West Coast forum as a high priority.

The Education and Training Advisory Committee is close to being finalised.  The Deputy Mayor will be the chair of this committee and has been working through applications with the Economic Development & Tourism Coordinator.  A reminder also that expressions of Interest close 10 July for positions on the Health & Active Lifestyle Advisory Committee.  Education, training and healthy lifestyles are key areas of concern for both Council and the community and these committees will provide advice and recommendations to Council, further assisting to enhance initiatives for the West Coast. 

A new app has been launched to improve the identification of asbestos. ‘ACM Check’ is available for free from app stores and guides users through visual inspections of their home through a series of questions and photos.  The app generates a report with recommendations on how to manage materials.  This is another important step towards educating communities about the dangers of asbestos and ensuring correct handling.  As always, if unsure, leave materials alone and call a licenced contractor to come and check.
