Mayor's Message 6 March 2018

At the February Council meeting Councillors unanimously agreed to change the date of the March meeting. The meeting will now be held on Monday 26 March at Tullah Community Hall Farrell Street, from 5pm.

The recent fires in Main Street, Zeehan have left an impact on the community, with three businesses affected.  The aftermath of such fires can take some time to resolve, working with insurance companies and the like.  As the buildings were not owned by Council our role is minimal.  In the aftermath of the fires Council erected barriers to prevent entry to the affected footpath and buildings, contacted the relevant insurers to push to have the site made safe as early as possible and we also urged people to comply with the signage and not to go near the properties in question.  Council will continue its efforts in coming weeks to ensure any potential harm to the community is minimised as the owners and insurance companies work through a difficult process.

Congratulations to Will Hodgman on his return to government.  Council was very pleased with the recent allocation of funds towards strategic work and a range of projects, along with the election commitments and we look forward to a continued positive partnership with the State.

Transport has been highlighted for many years by the West Coast community as a matter of concern.  Council has been working with the Department of State Growth and the Economic Advisory Committee on the matter and a survey around the potential use of a regular bus service on the West Coast is currently open for West Coasters to complete.  The survey is available online or hard copy and closes on 30 March.
