Submissions are now open for the public to tell Council what projects or infrastructure works should be considered in our next budget.

This process allows residents and ratepayers to have an active role in the future of its community.  All submissions will be considered, with Councillors focusing on delivering the best capital works program that is possible with our limited funds.  More information, including submission forms, is available on our website and at our office and agencies.  Submissions must be received by 31 March.

Whilst our thoughts are turning to next financial year, Council staff are working hard to deliver the current capital works program and deliver a balanced budget.  The final instalment of rates for 16-17 is due 31 March and I encourage all ratepayers concerned about their ability to make payments to contact Council as soon as possible.  Council is able to work with ratepayers to create suitable payment plans to ensure rates are still being paid without adding to the financial stress being faced by many. I’m aware that those with significant debt outstanding that Council has attempted to contact have been forwarded to debt recovery. It is much better to contact Council now than be faced with debt collection and additional legal costs.

Parks & Wildlife Service have been completing some planned burns on the West Coast to assist in fuel reduction.  Over the next month, as weather conditions permit, there will be a burn within the Crotty Ridge Regional Reserve at Austral Creek and Keel Ridge outside of Zeehan.  I encourage people to regularly check the Parks website for updates on when burns are occurring to ensure they don’t enter reserves during these periods.

It’s fantastic to see action at Hunters Hotel in Queenstown, thanks to hard work by its new owners. The hotel is an iconic part of West Coast history and the works have generated a lot of excitement amongst residents. I see the purchase of the hotel and the renovations as a sign of confidence in our region and look forward to seeing the finished product.
