West Coast Council has continued its commitment to build partnerships and deliver on the actions adopted in the West Coast Community Plan 2025 with the appointment of Vikki Iwanicki to the role of Community Development and Events Officer.

The role will provide Council and the community a key resource to assist groups, organisations and individuals to develop and deliver programs, initiatives and events that can further strengthen the region.

“A key component of this role will see Vikki work with a wide variety of West Coasters to further strengthen our community efforts, build capacity of existing groups and ultimately improve outcomes for all our West Coast communities,” West Coast Mayor Phil Vickers said.

Ms. Iwanicki comes to the West Coast from Townsville, North Queensland – via New York, where, as Manager of Volunteer Services for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, she was responsible for overseeing the development of many volunteer programs and played a key role in developing the community engagement strategy. 

“We believe Vikki has the skills to work closely with our West Coast communities to address their needs and deliver positive outcomes in key areas,” West Coast Council General Manager Dirk Dowling said.  “We’re excited about what Vikki and this role brings Council and community, with the opportunity to work closely on key projects, provide assistance to our fantastic community groups and further highlight why the West Coast is a great area to live.”

Commencing in the role this month, Vikki has already started assisting groups with funding applications and is busy coordinating events for Asbestos Awareness Month in November and a West Coast information stand at the Australian Masters Games – all whilst settling into the area and starting to meet with community groups.

“The West Coast is just stunning – and yet so many are asking why I’ve moved here!”  Ms. Iwanicki said.  “After fifteen years of New York’s pace and bustle it’s time to slow down and connect to a community again.  I was attracted to Tasmania because the people reminded me a lot of North Queenslanders – friendly, helpful and down-to-earth.  I look forward to meeting the people of the West Coast and working with them to deliver positive outcomes.”
