West Coast Mayor Phil Vickers today announced the appointment of Deloitte Access Economics to undertake the Strahan Airport Feasibility Study.
A study into the feasibility of operations at the Strahan Airport was highlighted by the West Coast community during the creation of the West Coast Community Plan 2025, with a commitment to create a business case for the development of the facility as a potential visitor and freight gateway to the region.
The Strahan Airport is owned and directly controlled by West Coast Council. It is a registered airport and complies with relevant Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) requirements.
“Council is very pleased to have appointed such experienced consultants as Deloitte Access Economics to undertake the study of this important facility,” Mayor Vickers said.
“This study will no doubt allow us to build on several semi-regular flights into Strahan from across Tasmania, including the Royal Flying Doctors Service, Par Avion and Helicopter Resources and help address conditional interest from transport operators for regular passenger transport including from Victoria.”
The project is funded by West Coast Council, with contributions from the State Government, TasPorts, RACT Strahan Village and other key stakeholders.
Strahan Village General Manager Adam Brooks said the airport was a key gateway to the West Coast.
“RACT is pleased to partner with the West Coast Council on this important project, which will help to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Strahan Airport,” Mr Brooks said.
TasPorts Manager Property Alex Barber said he was pleased to see Council taking such a proactive approach to the airport’s future.
“TasPorts recognises the importance of this infrastructure in addressing the tourism and freight needs on the West Coast,” Mr Barber said.
The Strahan Airport Feasibility Study will include, but is not limited to:
- An economic development analysis of current supply and demand drivers for airport development in the short, medium and long term;
- Clarification of the potential scope of infrastructure improvements and associated costs in line with possible future development of the facility;
- Analysis of the feasibility of larger aircraft landing at the airport, including regular passenger transport and potential freight services (including capital requirements that would underpin relevant upgrades); and
- Analysis of potential business opportunities associated with operations at the airport (based on current and potential future scenarios)
The project management team will consist of the West Coast Council General Manager, Economic Development & Tourism Coordinator and Manager of Works & Operations.
