Tailings Dam Approved for Rosebery

A tailings storage facility will be constructed in Rosebery following approval by West Coast Council at its meeting Tuesday 16 February. To be constructed by MMG Rosebery Mine the facility must adhere to strict permit conditions to ensure the facility meets strict environmental management guidelines.  The project will involve a two-staged embankment construction, emergency spillway, seepage collection drain and vegetated screening. 

Council Budget on Track

General Manager Dirk Dowling also reported that the Council’s budget was tracking well against estimates for the 2015/2016 financial year, with improved cash flows through building up reserves in line with efforts to find savings and consolidate finances this year.

 Renewed Parking By-Law a Step Closer

Council’s intention to make a by-law to regulate parking (replacing the current by-law which expires November 2016) is a step closer following a unanimous decision by Council to endorse the General Manager to finalise a draft regulatory impact statement (RIS).  The by-law will continue to regulate parking within designated parking areas owned or under the control of Council.  Following approval from the Director of Local Government the RIS and by-law will be made available for public comment.

Council Continues to Support Requests for Assistance

Financial and In-Kind Assistance applications were approved totalling almost $17,000 at the February Meeting of the West Coast Council.  The Council agreed to waive hire fees to allow a Youth Driver Awareness Program to be held at the Queenstown Airport and will provide assistance to a fundraiser for ill Strahan resident James Baldock whilst also committing over $16,000 to The Unconformity, to become a Gold Sponsor of the Festival to be held in October.
