West Coast Council and Public Health
West Coast Council has a broad range of responsibilities for public health, as outlined in the Local Government Act and other relevant legislation. Here are some of our key responsibilities:
- Health, Safety, and Welfare of the Community: We provide for the health, safety, and welfare of our community. This includes managing public health risks, enforcing health regulations, and implementing health promotion initiatives.
- Primary Healthcare: The Department of Health is responsible for hospitals, ambulances, community health, and related areas such as primary healthcare.
- Policy and Legislation: We are involved in the development and implementation of health-related policies and legislation to ensure that potential impacts on the Wesy Coast are fully considered.
- Community Health and Wellbeing: We wqork with our community and its specal interests and skills hroups to provide for the health and wellbeing of West Coast communities.
In terms of interfacing with other authorities and community groups, we actively engage in several ways:
- Intergovernmental Relations: West Coast Council serves as a link between the Commonwealth, Tasmanian State, and Local Government on matters of policy, finance, legislation/regulation, and roles and functions.
- Collaboration with Community Groups: We work closely with community groups to design and deliver programs that meet the distinctive needs of Tasmanian communities.
- Representation: Council members, council officers, and LGAT employees represent local government interests on a wide range of statutory authorities and government and non-government committees.
- Advocacy: We represent and advocate for the collective voice of Tasmania’s West Coast in local, state, and federal politics, and out in their communities.
These responsibilities and interfaces enable our Council to effectively manage public health and work collaboratively with other authorities and community groups for the benefit of our communities
