Strahan Gym and Multi-Purpose Sports Centre

Project Background

The Federal Government, through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, has provided the West Coast Council with funding for the construction of a new multi-purpose sport and gym facility.

This project is part of the implementation of the West Coast Sport and Recreation Plan.

The new facility will be located at the Strahan Sports Ground in Gaffney Street.

The funding program supports projects where the development of infrastructure that promotes stable, secure and viable regional economies. This Project intent is to increase the number of community members participating in physical activity and to assist in slowing the demographic losses of people in the Strahan and Zeehan region.

This project commenced in October 2012 and is due for completion by June 2025.

The building

The new building features interconnected indoor sports spaces, a basketball court, gym, change rooms, a kiosk and storage.   Built adjacent to the local oval and tennis courts, this project strengthens the town’s recreational core and supports growing regional demand for quality community infrastructure.

September 2025

The occupancy permit has been obtained.  Gym equipment is to be installed.  Liaison with user groups regarding commencing use continues.

July 2025

Bollards and wheel stops have been installed. Awaiting occupancy permit.

June 2025

Practical completion has been achieved, and the building has been handed back to Council. Car park sealing and line marking is complete, with bollards and wheel stops to be installed before an occupancy permit is obtained.

May 2025

The project is nearing completion.  The civil works in the car park (sealing, bollards etc) will be completed in June. Tas Fire Service are developing and providing an emergency evacuation centre plan.

FAQ

The total budget for this project is $3,700,000.

This comprises of Federal Government funding of $2,000,000 and a contribution from West Coast Council of $1,700,000.
