Outcomes – June Council Meeting

Council, at its meeting on June 23:

  • adopted the fees and charges for 2025-26, with a commitment for a review during the next financial year so they better reflect cost recovery and service provision
  • discussed a motion on notice from Cr Hamer regarding a review of processes for Macquarie Heads site leases. This is linked to Council’s lease with the Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service and will be reviewed in 2027.
  • discussed a question from Deputy Mayor Butterfield who asked for details around the programming of grading some gravel roads in Strahan.  A works request has been lodged, and inspections will occur which will determine a strategy for regular maintenance.
  • discussed a question from Deputy Mayor Butterfield around the accessibility of public toilets outside their normal shutting times.  Council staff are investigating a digital solution where people can use mobile phones to access toilets safely. 
  • noted a report on the Tasmanian Government’s Discussion Paper for the 20-year Preventative Health Strategy, noting the alignment with the West Coast Health & Wellbeing Strategy 2025-230
  • acknowledged a code of conduct report
  • noted an acquittal report for Financial & In-Kind Assistance for support of the Mother’s Day High Tea offered by the Lions Club of Rosebery.  The Lions Club received cash and in-kind support towards the event.
  • recognised the positive results achieved by the West Coast Visitor Information Centre in the annual TVIN (Tasmanian Visitor Information Network) survey.  The survey data indicated that over 97% of visitors to the centre were very satisfied with their experience.  This response, along with responses to several other questions, exceeded the state average.
  • awarded the tender for the construction of a Recyling shed at the Zeehan Landfill site. This project is part of the 2024-25 Annual Plan and is primarily funded by a $635,000 State Government grant, with additional support from the Landfill Levy ($185,000).

The next Council meeting will be a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 8 July to adopt the budget and rates for 2025-2026. The normal monthly meeting will follow on Tuesday 22 July.
