With cases of H5 bird flu detected on the mainland, Tasmanians are encouraged to be proactive in preparing for the possible arrival of bird flu in the state.
What is bird flu? Bird flu (H5 avian influenza) is a highly contagious disease that can affect wild, commercial and domesticated birds. It can be passed to other animals. Human infection is rare and requires direct and close contact with infected animals.
What could be impacted? The impact of bird flu can be widespread and include poultry farms, bird handlers, wildlife carers, tourism operators, food retailers, cafes and hospitality venues that rely on these animal products.
If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:
- AVOID contact.
- RECORD the type of animal, the number of animals, the location and take photos or video.
- REPORT by calling the Emergency Animal Disease hotline as soon as possible on 1800 675 888 or through the online reporting form on the NRE Tas website: https://nre.tas.gov.au/biosecurity-tasmania/animal-biosecurity/animal-health/poultry-and-pigeons/bird-flu
Businesses are encouraged to review their risks and business continuity plans and to seek support when needed.
