Council has a responsibility to its community to manage waste in an appropriate, well-planned manner. Good waste management can help in the protection of natural and physical resources, along with the health and safety of residents.

The success of waste management relies on a whole of community approach and contribution, with residents understanding its importance and following good waste practices. West Coast Council recognises that typically residents want to do the right things for waste management and disposal, but sometimes there are barriers in doing this.

Council is committed to working towards continued improvement in waste management through working with the community and stakeholders to reduce barriers and introducing progressive ways to reduce waste to landfill.

To assist in its commitment to waste management, West Council Council is a member of the Cradle Coast Waste Management Group (CCWMG), which was formed to improve waste management from a regional perspective and to provide specialty waste reduction services across the broader North-West of Tasmania region, with the group representing all nine Councils from across the West and North West.

Litter

Litter is any item that finds its way into the environment which should not be there. Frequently littered items include cigarette butts, drink containers, takeaway food packaging, plastic shopping bags, balloons, food scraps, household rubbish, abandoned vehicles and material falling from an unsecured load.

Litter can harm people and the environment, encouraging pests and the germs and disease. Litter is costly to clean-up and affects the way visitors view our communities. You can prevent litter by:

  • Collecting your dogs droppings with a bag or newspaper and depositing it in a waste bin.
  • If you smoke, use a portable ashtray when out and about to dispose of cigarette butts.
  • If you see an overflowing West Coast Council bin, please let us know (insert link to contact info)
  • Not overfilling your kerbside bins and making sure your waste is contained in bags.
  • Keeping a bag in your vehicle to collect rubbish in.
  • If you see litter, pick it up (if safe to do so) and dispose of it correctly.

Abandoned Vehicles

Council will only remove vehicles if an abandoned vehicle notification is received from Tasmania Police, with a request to remove the vehicle from its location. In these instances the vehicle is taken to landfill.
