Recycling is crucial in ensuring materials are cycled back through the manufacturing process, rather than going straight to landfill. This not only helps our environment, but our economy as well.
Individual residents and businesses are encouraged to recycle – if you would like to commence using our recycling collection service, please complete a Bin Request Form
If you rent a property please discuss the program with your landlord who may be able to cover the costs of the wheelie bin and yearly collection fee.
Council provides a monthly collection of a 240-litre yellow-lidded wheelie bin. All properties within the collection area have access to a kerbside recycling collection service.
There will be no recycling kerbside collection on Christmas Day. Should your collection fall on Christmas Day we will advise on this website, on local radio and our Facebook page what the alternative collection day will be. Kerbside collection operates as usual on other public holidays.
Recycling Bin
The recycling wheelie bin has a yellow lid. Use this bin for recycling common household items. Make sure to leave the items loose (don’t put your items in bin bags). A list of what can and can’t go in your recycling bin is provided below. To purchase a recycling bin, click the button below:
Community Recycling Hub
A FREE recycling hub is available in the reception area of the Council Office in Queenstown, providing another opportunity to recycle items, in addition to the monthly wheelie bin recycling collection.
A great range of items can be dropped into this new hub, including:
- Oral care products and packaging – like toothpaste and toothbrushes
- Medication blister packs
- Pens and markers
- Mobile phones and accessories
- Razors and their packaging
- Small e-waste such as remote controls, a computer mouse, handheld cameras
People can call into the Council office Monday-Friday during opening hours to use the hub at no cost.
This Community Recycling Hub is another step forward as part of our focus on improving waste and recycling options and management.

- Rosebery Library, located at Rosebery District School
- Strahan IGA

- Queenstown Library
- Tullah Post Office

All materials collected from recycling bins are transported to a facility in Spreyton.
This facility is not owned or operated externally by West Coast Council.
At the facility, products are sorted using a combination of people and mechanical sorting methods.
When there are high levels of contamination, such as incorrect disposal of plastic bags or meat trays, the contaminated collection is disposed of in landfill.
This is disappointing for those recycling correctly, and costly to the community and the environment.
If we all do our part to correctly sort these materials, we can avoid unnecessary landfill disposals.
Once sorted, the materials are sold within Australia and overseas, where they recycle the product.
