IMPORTANT TESTING UPDATE

Mobile Testing Clinics will be on the West Coast in late May. 29- 30 May: Rosebery, 31 May-1 June: Queenstown.To request a test, call your GP or the Public Health Hotline (1800 671 738). You can only be tested if you have a referral. 

Anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms should come forward and get tested. If in doubt, get a test.

As of 30th March, Council offices are closed to the general public. Although we are no longer doing face to face we can still assist you on phone, email, by post or if you drop a letter in our new post box outside the Queenstown office.

Online Council Meetings

All questions from the public should be submitted to the General Manager or a Councillor (to raise on your behalf) up to 7 days prior to the meeting. Those submitted after that time will be taken as questions without notice. A recording of the meeting will be available on our website in the days following the meeting.

West Coast Council’s role in Emergency Management is one of leadership, support and of fostering partnerships with various organisations and agencies, including Tasmania Fire Service (TFS), State Emergency Service, Parks & Wildlife and Tasmania Police.

Council’s General Manager has been appointed by the Tasmanian Minister for Police & Emergency Management as Municipal Emergency Management Coordinator, with the Manager of Civil Works & Town Maintenance appointed as Deputy.

Are you prepared?

The West Coast Disaster Information handout provides West Coasters with vital details about what to do to prepare for an emergency and what to expect in the event of an evacuation.

The flyer, funded through the Natural Disaster Resilience Grant Program (NDRGP), provides residents with tips to create an emergency plan, including an emergency kit checklist, and also includes maps of the larger West Coast communities. 

West Coast Emergency Management Committee

The Mayor chairs this Committee, with membership comprising of representatives from Parks and Wildlife, West Coast Wilderness Railway, Tasmanian Health Services, Copper Mines of Tasmania, Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmania Police, Hydro, TasWater and SES.   The Committee meets quarterly and works together to ensure appropriate resourcing and planning is conducted in preparation for potential emergencies, including looking at various emergency scenarios and developing appropriate actions.

State Emergency Service

The SES is responsible for storm and flood response and Road Crash Rescue on Tasmania’s West Coast.  Council provides funding for the SES Units located at Queenstown, Zeehan and Rosebery.

Council supports the local State Emergency Service with the provision of adequate resources for the programs which it undertakes during the year. Council aims to continue supporting the local SES branches located in Queenstown, Zeehan and Rosebery and to ensure that the resources provided are adequate to meet the needs of the units.

With trained volunteers on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, the SES provides vital services to the West Coast community, including:

  • Road Crash Rescue for all West Coast roads between the Cradle Mountain turnoff and Derwent bridge;
  • Search and Rescue;
  • Recovery;
  • Assistance with storm and flood damage;
  • Support for Police, Ambulance and Fire Services at crime scenes, accidents and fires;
  • Traffic control at public events

The three West Coast Units all have a first response and second response vehicle each.

TasALERT - An emergency warning and information system 

TasALERT is an emergency warning and information system in an online platform.

It will provide a single source of clear and consistent emergency and resilience information from across government in an easy-to-use and high performing interface. Outside emergency response periods, the website will provide general information on topics such as volunteering, disaster preparedness and resilience-focused campaigns.

The homepage of the website will change to highlight any current incidents within Tasmania. Each incident will have a dedicated page displaying all available information (geo-spatial, social media, developed content, etc.) specific to that incident.

The website also aggregates social media feeds from emergency services and Government departments, as well as using geo-spatial data to provide appropriate and authoritative emergency information through the map.
