Waste & Recycling

Council has a responsibility to its community to manage waste in an appropriate, well-planned manner, which can facilitate the protection of natural and physical resources and the health and safety of residents.

Garbage Collection & Wheelie Bins

The urban areas of the municipal area receive a weekly mobile garbage bin (wheelie bin) collection service.  Wheelie bins are available for purchase from Council.

When does my wheelie bin get collected?  Council conducts weekly collections in each West Coast town:

  • Tuesday - Zeehan, Strahan  and Gormanston
  • Wednesday - Queenstown
  • Thursday - Rosebery & Tullah

Recycling

Council conducts a monthly recycling collection service available to the towns as listed.

  • 1st Friday of the Month - Queenstown & Strahan
  • 2nd Friday of the Month - Zeehan, Rosebery & Tullah

Individual residents and businesses are encouraged to recycle - if you rent a property please discuss the program with your landlord who may be able to cover the costs of the wheelie bin and yearly collection fee.

Please Note -

  • Residential properties can have a maximum of 2 waste bins and 2 recycling bins.
  • Commercial properties can have a maximum of 4 waste bins and 4 recycling bins

As part of Council’s Waste Strategy,  2 x 6m3 recycle bins have been placed in each town at the following locations.

Items that can be recycled  will be paper & cardboard in one bin and glass, plastic,  aluminum (bottles & glass) in the other.

Please contact Council on (03) 64714 700 or visit Council's Queenstown Office to arrange the purchase and delivery of a garbage and/or recycling wheelie bin.

BATTERY RECYCLING

Battery recycling bins can be found at Rosebery Library | Strahan IGA | Zeehan Library | Queenstown Library | Tullah Post Office for the following batteries.

  • Button Batteries
  • AA and AAA (household)
  • Power Tool Batteries
  • Laptop/phone Batteries
  • Hearing Aid Batteries

Strictly no automotive batteries.

Waste Transfer Stations

Transfer Stations are located in each town for the disposal of household waste.

Council requests that patrons using the transfer stations respect the facility provided. Please read and obey signs at the transfer stations. Placement of household waste in the wrong area can result in a fine.

The transfer stations have been set up for domestic use and by 'Doing the Right Thing' you are helping yourself as well as the whole community.

Please call 6471 4700 for all loads that need to go direct to the central landfill site in Zeehan.

Bulk waste, hazardous waste and asbestos should not be disposed of at the transfer stations. For details regarding disposal of bulk and hazardous waste contact Council.
