Mayor's Message 13 September 2016

General Manager Dirk Dowling and I will be meeting with Premier Hodgman on Thursday to discuss actions to move the West Coast forward to achieve diversity of industry and sustainability.

Council has raised on several occasions many issues and opportunities with the State Government since the adoption of the West Coast Community Plan 2025 and we hope this meeting will see several of these outstanding items dealt with.  Treasurer Peter Gutwein and Roger Jaensch, Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business, Trade and Red Tape Reduction will also be at the meeting.

The NBN rollout continues to be a priority for Council following the commitment by the Federal Government to partner with the State Government to provide a mix of technologies including fibre to the node and fixed wireless broadband to the many towns on the West Coast, instead of the inferior satellite NBN service only.  Unfortunately despite several requests we have been unable to gain any update on the partnership and infrastructure timeframes for West Coast connection to the NBN from State Minister for Information Technology and Innovation Michael Ferguson, nor from the Federal Government Minister for Communications Mitch Fifield.  I will be raising this as a matter of priority with the Premier during our meeting, and continue to follow up at the Federal level.

West Coast Economic Development, Tourism and Events Coordinator Simon Lee has been busy facilitating a variety of projects across the region (around 60 small medium and large opportunities are being pursued).  Of late that has included ensuring the State’s free Wi-Fi infrastructure could be installed at the West Coast Visitor Information Centre in Strahan. With over 75,000 people going through the Centre annually this is a great opportunity for tourists to use the free service to share photos of their time on the West Coast to family and friends across the world.  For more details visit www.freewifi.tas.gov.au.
