Mayor's Message 11 October 2016

Spring is a great time to prepare your property for the summer weather. A great way to prepare is to clear fire hazards from on and around your property and to develop a fire plan for you and your family.

No one likes to think of an uncontrollable situation happening however we should all be aware of what to do.  Council will soon be delivering to West Coast households a flyer providing West Coast disaster information.  The flyer, with a magnet so everyone can pop it on the fridge for easy access, will give vital information about how to prepare and where to go in an emergency.

Council has advertised for consultants to assist in our Strategic Land Use Planning Project. This major project will commence in early 2017 and will provide an opportunity to look into the drivers, opportunities and limitations currently facing land usage, ownership, zoning etc on the West Coast. Strategic Planning for the future is a key focus for Council. Building an evidence base for zoning and other land availability measures will form part of the project, as will community and stakeholder engagement. The West Coast needs to look to the future, plan for future growth and set the right climate and framework for economic development to occur. This project is the start of that process. Council also needs to be ready for a transition to the proposed new State Wide Planning Framework and this project will help in that regard.

Simon Lee, the West Coast Economic Development, Tourism and Events Coordinator, has been in contact over the last month or so with the new owners of Hunters Hotel in Queenstown – they recently visited again to assess the renovation process with the view to reopen late next year as a bed and breakfast.
