Mayor's Message 1 August 2017

The West Coast continues to show we are a must-see destination, with four awards at the Cradle Coast Tourism Awards last week.

Congratulations to the Zeehan Bush Camp & Caravan Park, Strahan Village, World Heritage Cruise and West Coast Wilderness Railway on their awards.

As an industry and region we must continue to build on this good work to ensure the West Coast remains on the itinerary of both Tasmanians and visitors to the state.  Council is a key stakeholder in the tourism industry, as an operator of the West Coast Visitor Information Centre, and as a community leader.  We are actively working with the new tourism association and are awaiting details from the State Government regarding funding to assist in the completion of a West Coast branding strategy, an important process as we work towards growing the industry.

Last week I gave evidence to the NBN Senate Committee regarding the West Coast roll-out.  Queenstown pharmacist Chris Walpole and Mt Lyell Manager Peter Walker also gave evidence, providing information to the committee to ensure the importance of high-quality internet on the West Coast – and the impacts if this doesn’t occur – were heard.  Council remains pleased with the commitment to bring fibre options to the West Coast, rather than the satellite option previously committed, however if fibre to the premises is an option we will urge the government and NBN Co to fully explore the possibility and implement if it is shown to be the best option for our region.

Finally, congratulations to all involved in the Rosebery Women’s Hockey Association – celebrating 90 years.  A great effort and it’s great to see the sport still going strong on the West Coast.
