Mayor's Message 21 November 2017

This week we farewell Simon Lee from the role of Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator.

As the inaugural “Eco Dev” person Simon commenced with Council almost two years ago at a time when the community had not long created the vision for our future – the West Coast Community Plan 2025.  Simon was tasked with the challenging role of developing and implementing many of the outcomes listed in the 2025 Plan.  Simon has been integral to projects such as securing a mix of NBN technologies for the West Coast and the Destination West Coast event bringing West Coast tourism operators together to set the foundations for a stronger industry whilst also working with the Economic Development Advisory Committee and securing funding for the West Coast Branding Project and the Strahan Airport Feasibility Study.  We wish Simon well in his new role in Hobart and are currently recruiting for another passionate, enthusiastic person to take on the role.

TasWater is continuing works to upgrade the Conglomerate Dam in Queenstown.  This dam is the primary water storage and supply for Queenstown and preliminary embankment works are expected to be completed by March.  During the works there is an increase in truck traffic to the dam site as large amounts of sand, gravel and rock are delivered.  This is an important project to ensure a reliable water supply is provided long-term in Queenstown.

Council is seeking a chairperson for its Audit Committee, established to work with Council on its financial and management practices to ensure transparent and independent processes.  I thank outgoing Chair Sandy Chilcott for her time in the role. Anyone interested in the role can contact the General Manager’s office for more details.
