Mayor’s Message 29 May 2018

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate two young people from the West Coast who recently took part in the Windeward Bound voyage.

Mountain Heights students Liam Jensen and Jessica Goodsell recently took part in sailing the tall ship. The voyage teaches participants not only the logistics of sailing a tall ship, but also how to work in a team and how to communicate to overcome obstacles. I was happy to support Liam on his trip with a contribution of $290 from the Mayor’s Contingency Fund, while Jessica was able to fully fund the trip thanks to various supporters. Interested members of the public are invited to attend a community meeting about the progress of the Strahan Airport Feasibility Study currently being conducted by Deloitte Access Economics. The Study will determine the feasibility of the Strahan Airport as a potential visitor and freight gateway for the region. The community meeting about the study will be held at the Strahan Golf Club on Wednesday 13 June from 6pm until 8pm. Please contact Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator on 6471 4700 for more information.

Council will begin construction of a new pathway to access the Tullah Pioneer Cemetery in the next few weeks. Previous access to the cemetery was closed following the sale of a property through an unpaid rates auction. Since this occurred Council investigated several alternative sites, with the best option identified as being as Crown Land. Council subsequently began negotiations with Crown Land to utilise this land to construct a new pathway to the cemetery. I wish to thank Tullah residents and indeed the Tullah Progress Association for their patience while this matter has been negotiated.
