Upgrade of Unsealed Roads in Council sights

19 August 2015

Unsealed roads on the West Coast may be upgraded should a request for proposed works be approved under the Roads to Recovery Program.

This funding is provided by the Federal Government and West Coast Council agreed at its monthly meeting held on 18th August that the upgrade of Trial Harbour, Granville Harbour, Macquarie Heads and Ocean Beach Roads would serve the most appropriate use of the funding allocation for this financial year.

These unsealed roads have experienced increased traffic volume over recent years and approval for this project under Roads to Recovery will condense Council’s annual maintenance budget, given the increase in maintenance required across the four roads.

Should the request be successful this will allow Council to transfer $50,000 previously allocated to Trial Harbour Road to the West Coast Footpath Programme for 2015-2016.

Organisations benefit from West Coast Council assistance

At the monthly West Coast Council meeting on 18th August, Councillors considered applications for assistance in accordance with the recently adopted Financial and In-Kind Assistance Policy which ensures transparency and consistency in the management of requests for Council assistance.

The funding approvals will assist a Work Readiness Education Day for West Coast Year 9 and 10 students, the restoration of the Queenstown Pioneer Cemetery, Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program, West Coast Community Arts Exhibition and the Strahan World Record Stargazing event.

This is in addition to over $9000 funding approved in July to a range of West Coast organisations.
